Carols by Candlelight - 8 December 2017

Christmas trees are up, Santa lists are drafted and parents are fretting over their ‘to-do’ lists. To get the festive season officially underway, Shellharbour City Council host its annual Carols by Candlelight event on Friday, 8 December.

The event will be held at Reddall Reserve, Lake Illawarra Friday 8 December, starting at 5.30pm with children’s concert, the Ronald McDonald show, before carols begins at 6.30pm. The show will end with a spectacular fireworks display at 8.30pm.

Mayor Marianne Saliba said this year’s program beautifully showcased the depth of talent in our region,” Cr Saliba said.

"Our carols event is a highlight in the region’s Christmas calendar, attracting thousands of people to our foreshore each year. It brings exceptional vocalists and performers to the stage to dazzle the crowds and welcome in the festive season,” she said.

Shannon Brown is this year’s new music director. Originally from Wollongong, he has toured internationally as one of the frontline tenors and musical director for internationally acclaimed group, The Ten Tenors.

Recently, he was musical director and piano accompanist for the Marina Prior & Mark Vincent Show that toured nationally. He is currently musical director of the Kings of Vegas tour with the 2013 winner of The Voice, Harrison Craig.

Performers at this year’s Carols include the Southern Lights Academy featuring 15 young male singers, SoOpera performing a song from their latest production Little Mermaid, the Illawarra Youth Arts Project, performing a number from the movie Elf and the Corpus Cristi vocal ensemble lead by Angela Quinn.

Courtney Texeria will also be making a return performance. She made her first Carols performance when she was only nine. Now in her 20s, she has released her first single, is working on an album and has started her own performing arts studio.

Mother and daughter Serafina and Sabrina Minns are also returning. The two have been involved in the cast of Carols for many years.
Guaranteed crowd pleasers, The Disability Trust’s Music Makers, make a return to the stage this year with their energetic and entertaining routine.
