Civic Centre - Official Opening

Shellharbour City Council’s new Civic Centre will be officially opened by His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd), Governor of New South Wales, and Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba tomorrow, 2 December at 10am (arrive 9.45am).
The ceremony will feature the laying of a plaque, with former Mayors and General Managers being in attendance. Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said the completion of the Civic Centre was a defining moment in the city’s history.
“I’m honoured to have His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd), Governor of New South Wales, here with us to officially open this important piece of community infrastructure,” Cr Saliba said.
“I’m so proud of this city of 70,000 residents and the way it has grown and matured. It was incumbent on Council to provide a true heart and central place for our cultural and community activities. We needed to provide this building to serve our residents.
“Lamerton House wasn’t a purpose-built building for Council, merely an office building that we purchased while working on a vision for afacility that would last for many years. This building will serve the needs of our community and customers,” Cr Saliba said.
Shellharbour City Council General Manager Carey McIntyre praised all of the staff involved in the project and said that the Civic Centre had met its budget ($59.5 million).
“Council first adopted its plan for the Civic Centre in 1993, so this project has been a part of our vision for a long time. I have no doubt that the community will enjoy using the centre and all that it has to offer,” Mr McIntyre said.
Staff have already started moving in, with library employees now working from the new centre. Remaining staff will move over in coming weeks, with the centre open for business to the public in early January.
The building features modern community spaces including library and museum, civic square, auditorium, public art, innovative construction methods, sustainability features and a Green Star rating.
