Fun in the sun has begun!

Time to grab your sunscreen and head to our city’s stunning beaches and swimming pools – Shellharbour’s aquatic season is officially open!

Shellharbour City Council’s aquatic season officially kicks off tomorrow, with Shellharbour North beach and Warilla beach patrolled by both Council lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers seven days a week from 9.30am to 5pm.

The start of the season also sees the introduction of a new portable lifeguard tower designed to enhance the visibility and provide protection from the elements.

The tower was designed by council staff (fabricators and lifeguards) and a local engineering company, then built by Council’s fabrication team.

It is made of stainless steel and aluminium which is chosen for its non-corrosive properties, perfect for withstanding the harsh beach environment.

Importantly, the portable nature of the tower means it can be moved depending on changing surf conditions.

Council’s Aquatics Coordinator Graham Suckley said having lifeguards in an elevated position would help with spotting dangers and watching swimmers.

“Protecting lifeguards from the fatiguing effect of the elements while maintaining high quality surveillance is a challenge,” Mr Suckley said.

“The advantages of this type of tower are numerous. Lifeguards stand out to the public and are easily identified and the tower can be moved if the beach landscape changes or surf conditions warrant it.

With school holidays underway, residents are encouraged to have fun, stay safe and look after each other.

Mr Suckley also said there was more school holiday fun at Oak Flats heated swimming pool with a giant pool inflatable obstacle course.

The course will be open each Wednesday and Friday of the holidays from 1pm to 3pm. Normal admission fees apply.
