Little Park Playground Official Opening

The much-anticipated new playground at Little Park in Shellharbour Village will be officially opened on Tuesday 1 May.

Largely designed by children, the park is the culmination of a major community engagement process, including workshops with schools, online and social media feedback and more.

More than 20,000 people shared their ideas. This included 115 Corpus Christi High School students who gathered student feedback, participated in design and budgeting workshops and then used Minecraft to bring the design to life.

The playground is a $360,000 investment by Council, taking 12 months to complete. It included the creation of additional seating and refurbishment of the amenities building and rotunda.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said the new park would “bring out the child in everyone”. She expressed thanks for the commitment and enthusiasm of Council staff, who ensured the community’s wishes and imagination were reflected in the final design.

“Council staff worked hard to create a playground that kids will love. They listened to what children and their families wanted, which is so important,” Cr Saliba said.

“In addition to the playground itself, the kids told us that the water, sand and fig trees were all important to them. The nature play space around the fig tree was added after it lost limbs.”

Creative Recreation Solutions (CRS) constructed the playground which features:
  • Accessible play equipment
  • Play tower with slides, flying fox, swings
  • Nature play, tree fort with climbing activities
  • Rock climbing wall, climbing net, rope bridge
  • Musical play instruments, tactile play, in-ground trampoline
A Facebook event has been created for the official opening which will feature a musician who uses recycled material as instruments in an interactive performance.
