Local sustainable food the focus of regional event

An evening of tasting and talking about locally sourced, sustainable food will be held this month as part of National Fair Food Week, 7 to 16 October.

The ‘Connecting over Fair Food’ regional event is being organised by Food Fairness Illawarra with the support of Shellharbour City, Wollongong City and Kiama Municipal Council.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said it would be a celebration of the consideration and innovation applied to food production by people in the region.

“We are now home to a broad range of producers who use ethical, sustainable practices to provide some delightful foods,” Cr Saliba said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to connect and share information about food security, production systems and sustainable agriculture,” she said.

Fair food advocate and lecturer Sandy Murray from the University of Tasmania will be the keynote speaker for the event and will talk about ‘Strengthening the local food economy in Tassie – what does it take?’

Local speakers will include Chris Bridge from Mahbrook Organics, Thomas Chiumento from Caveau, Donna Walsh from Warrawong Community Lunch and Dylan Powell from Intergen Munch Out Kiama.
