A section of the Illawarra Regional Airport’s east-west runway will be reconstructed, following a decision this week by Shellharbour City Council.
Councillors agreed to fund proposed runway reconstruction works on the eastern half of the runway.
The east-west runway is critical for the safe operation of light aircraft during strong prevailing winds, when the main runway can become unsafe.
Mayor Marianne Saliba said the planned reconstruction is in keeping with Council’s Illawarra Regional Airport Strategic and Business Plan.
“This work will ensure the Illawarra Regional Airport will be able to be fully utilised and remain safe for light aircraft during strong winds,” the Mayor said.
The reconstruction is expected to be completed before the 2017 Wings Over Illawarra event in May.
