Shellharbour wins bid for 2020 State ALGWA Conference

Shellharbour City Council has been selected to host the next NSW Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) conference in 2020.

With branches in every state and territory in Australia, ALGWA NSW is the state’s peak representative body supporting women who are in any way involved in local government.

The organisation aims to promote gender equality within councils for both elected representatives and staff, and encourages women to embrace challenges and be the best version of themselves.

It seeks to strengthen networking, mentoring and innovative opportunities that encourage and support women in local government.

Shellharbour City Council’s 2020 conference will feature an excellent selection of speakers, organised activities and workshops.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba, who is President of ALGWA’s NSW Branch, said she was thrilled to be hosting the 2020 conference.

She said the theme will be ‘Women In The Know Are Women Who Grow’, which will explore the importance of women seeking knowledge in order to contribute, empower and lead.

“I’m so proud that Shellharbour City will hosting this important event, particularly given that our city has both a female Mayor and Deputy Mayor,” Mayor Saliba said of herself and Deputy Mayor Cr Kellie Marsh.

“Women in local government, like women in all industries and workplaces, often don’t recognise their value.

“It’s vitally important for women to support and mentor each other professionally and to harness every opportunity they can.”

“This event attracts people from across NSW and will be a boost to our economy, with participants staying in local accommodation, eating in our restaurants, and purchasing all manner of goods and services during their stay.

“I’m very much looking forward to showcasing Shellharbour and showing representatives from all over NSW what our beautiful city has to offer.”
