Release

Shellharbour City Council is encouraging residents to celebrate their neighbourhoods and the people that make them great places to live by making a nomination in the 19th annual Good Neighbour Awards.

The awards are held in conjunction with Neighbour Day, Australia’s annual celebration of community.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said the awards aimed to build connections between residents within neighbourhoods.

“This year’s Neighbour Day theme is social connections. It recognises how establishing support networks within a neighbourhood can provide an improved sense of security, prevent isolation and generally increase an individual or family’s overall wellbeing,” Cr Saliba said.

“These awards are a wonderful opportunity to give thanks to your neighbour’s for their kindness, efforts, and willingness to lend a hand.

“It can be the simple act of checking in on one another, to helping take out the bins, looking after children, pets or even plants. The support and assistance that good neighbours can provide is endless,” she said.

This year the Good Neighbour Awards includes a 2020 Neighbour of the Year, a drawing competition for children aged 12 and under, and the addition of the 2020 Street of the Year.

Prizes have been donated by Stockland Shellharbour, Kmart and the Shellharbour Club. They include gift vouchers up to the value of $500 and a street party for the winning street.

Last year’s Shellharbour Neighbour of the Year was Maryann Whiffen.

Nominations close 4.30pm on 30 March 2020 and winners will be announced at the Good Neighbour Awards event in May 2020. Nomination forms are available at Shellharbour Civic Centre or online at https://www.shellharbour.nsw.gov.au/living-here/good-neighbours-awards.
