Warilla Beach goers can look forward to a splash of colour on their next visit with the completion of a brand new mural on Warilla Lifeguard Tower commissioned by Shellharbour City Council.

The artwork is part of Council’s Urban Art Program, which aims to deter vandalism and graffiti through the installation of large-scale murals across the City.

The mural is by local Illawarra artist Claire Foxton and incorporates a coastal botanic design with native species of flora found nearby to waterways, including the Banksia and Maidenhair Fern.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that the artwork was a joyous reflection and celebration of place.

“The artwork breathes new life into this popular public space. It seeks to connect and inspire the daily lives of the area’s residents and visitors through shining light on our City’s beautiful natural world,” Cr Saliba Said.

A new public artwork titled Rad by Graham Chalcroft, AKA Vertebrae, has recently been installed at Shellharbour Skate Park.

The artwork combines skateboard, bike and scooter elements to create a dynamic sculptural form. It was designed through a collaborative community design workshop process between skate park users and the artist.

Two new sculptural artworks for Reddall Reserve are also in the process of being commissioned by Council as part of the recently endorsed Reddall Reserve Masterplan. These will be installed in the second half of 2020.

Council is currently drafting the City’s first Public Art Strategy. The strategy will be presented to Council in March before being placed on public exhibition.
