SHELLHARBOUR CITY TO HOLD ANNUAL RECONCILIATION FLAG WALK

Hundreds of students from 32 local schools will walk with the community as part of Shellharbour City’s annual Reconciliation Flag Walk on Monday 29 May 2023.

Aboriginal Elders, civic leaders and schoolchildren will each play a part in the special flag exchange to mark the event.

The walk will begin at 10am at Warilla Surf Club and travel along the shared footpath north towards Reddall Reserve East.

A civic ceremony will be held from 10.45am. Students will then be encouraged to have a yarn with an Elder over a free barbecue lunch.

This year’s theme is ‘be a voice for generations’ and calls on Australians to honour the work of generations past who fought for justice in Australia and to work together today to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation for the generations to come.

Shellharbour City Council Mayor Chris Homer said everyone had a part to play in reconciliation.

“Working towards a reconciled community and country involves being brave, speaking up, and making changes in our daily lives – where we work, live and socialise,” Mayor Homer said.

“Our city’s Aboriginal history extends for thousands of years. Recognising, honouring and protecting the history and Aboriginal culture of Shellharbour City is an integral part of strengthening connection to the place we call home, and to one another.

"I encourage everyone to take time to learn and reflect on what reconciliation means and how we can make change in the journey to reconciliation,” he said.
