Annual Celebration of Ability

International Day of People with a Disability is a United Nations observed day that is celebrated world-wide on 3 December each year.

This regional ‘Celebration of Ability calendar’, provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements and contributions that people with a disability make to our community.

This is your opportunity to join in our Celebration of Ability. Have fun and enjoy yourself!

The following events have been organised in conjunction with Wollongong City Council & will run from the 26 November to 9 December.

26 November- Celebrate Sailing Day

TIME: 10am to 3pm

LOCATION: Illawarra Yacht Club Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong

COST: $5 per person sailing.

Subject to good weather conditions. Complete water supervision. All life jackets supplied for the day. All volunteers welcome.

29 November- Ember Emergency Preparedness Workshop

TIME: 9.30am to 12pm

LOCATION: Shellharbour Civic Centre 76 Cygnet Ave, Shellharbour City Centre

Flagstaff’s EMBER program encourages people living with a disability to plan, act early and be prepared for emergency situations. Standing for Emergency Management Backpack Evacuation Resource, EMBER comprises of emergency plans and resources specific to people with disability.

NDIS providers, carers and people living with disability are encouraged to attend the workshop to find out more about the program and how it can work for them.

29 November- Healthy End of Life

TIME: 5.30pm to 7.30pm

Talking about death and dying is hard. Come along to our safe space where people can come together, drink tea and coffee and enjoy an open and relaxed conversation about death and dying with a view to helping people make the most of, and enjoy their lives.

You can talk about planning for end of life and the options available to give you choice and control. This session is not recommended for people who are recently bereaved.

1 December- 7 December- FREE Shellharbour City Council’s pools

Shellharbour City Council's pools will be FREE for residents with disabilities and their cares. Includes Aqua Aerobics at Oak Flats and Albion Park Pools. Chair lift and portable steps are availablw to assist with entry to Oak Flats Pool. Speak to the lifeguards on duty for more information.

2 December- Natural pest management for indoor plants

TIME: 10am to 11am

LOCATION: Online via Microsoft teams

Did you know that plants can suffer from stress? Sadly once they are stressed they are susceptible to getting sick and event bullied by insects. We can help our plants to distress, recover and start to do well.

We will identify some pests, discuss immediate treatment and then look at how to make your plats relax and live well.

3 December- Have a go surf day

TIME: 9am to 1.30pm LOCATION: Thirroul Beach Pool Bath Street, Thirroul

COST: $10 per participant

Fun, safe morning of tandem surfing fully supervised water activities. All surfing equipment provided; community volunteers assist DSA members throughout the day’s activities. Pool sessions first before entering the ocean to catch some waves. Beach wheelchair available for those with mobility issues.

All participants receive a give-away bag and trophy during presentation. BBQ lunch also provided.

4 December- Natural Pest Management

TIME: 2pm to 4pm

LOCATION: Pulse Community Garden O’Leary Road, Keiraville (Head for the Ken Ausburn Track, look for the red sign)

Food is precious and when you grow it yourself it is heartbreaking when pests move in and decimate the lot before you pick it. Join us at the beautiful Pulse Community Garden to look at ways to combat natural pests and compost to get your plants healthy.

6 December- War Against Food

TIME: 10am

LOCATION: Wollongong Library Level 1, The Lab, 41 Burelli Street, Wollongong

Join us in the war against food waste. Save your dough. Learn to use your stale bread to create new dishes for your family. The workshop will cover what you can do with your leftovers, how to store them and how to jazz them up. Come along for some games, taste testing and ideas for menu planning to help save money and reduce food waste. There is a lift in the Library that will take you to Level 1 if stairs are not your preference. Please let us know how we can make this workshop more accessible for you. 

6 December- Inclusive Watercolour Scarves Workshop

TIME: 10:30am

LOCATION: Warilla Library, Woolworths Ave, Warilla

In this hands-on workshop you’ll design and create a pretty scarf using a simple - yet effective - alcohol dye-and-scrunch technique. You’ll take home a beautiful, wearable artwork that reflects your style and favourite colours. This session is suitable for beginners. Numbers are limited and bookings are essential.

If a support person is required, this is to be provided by the participant.

9 December- Women with Disability Art Exhibition 

TIME: 12pm to 2pm

LOCATION: Illawarra Women’s Health Centre 2/10 Belfast Ave, Warilla

This event showcases the amazing works of art produced by the women from the Playing with Colour group (facilitated by Kim Sattler). Pieces will be available for purchase.
