Rewiring Australia suggest that induction cooktops are the most energy efficient cooktop available, consuming only 40% of the annual energy required by gas and conventional electric alternatives.
In addition to lowering your energy bill, induction cooktops offer fast boiling times, precise temperature control, enhanced safety and improved indoor air quality relative to gas cooktops. Induction cooktops also allow for easy cleaning as a result of their continuous smooth surface.
Please not however induction cooktops are not suitable for those with pacemakers and alternative electric cooktop options should be explored.
How do I select the right induction cooktop for me?
It is important to consider the power capacity of your kitchen when budgeting for an induction cooktop. Higher electrical capacity (2-3 phase power) is generally required to allow you to run a multi-zone cooktop on high power with fast heating time. What financial support is available?
Council is currently offering a rebate to eligible households and small businesses for the installation of an induction cooktop as part of round 3 of our Sustainability Rebates Program. Under this program, eligible applicants can also apply for a switchboard upgrade rebate.
Eligible residents and small businesses can apply for up to 2 rebates per applicant property.
Sustainability Rebates Program eligibility criteria:
Only available for households and small businesses in the Shellharbour LGA
Installation must be completed from 1 July 2026 until 30 June 2027
Rebates are not available for new developments or installations on assets or land owned or controlled by State Government entities.
Must be installed by a licensed tradesperson and meet all compliance and installation standards
