Generating power through rooftop solar on your home or business will help to reduce your energy bills and your greenhouse gas emissions. The average home solar system will pay itself back within five years through energy bill savings.
Pair your solar system with a battery and you can use the power you generate during the day to also power your home or business at night!
How do I select the right system for me?
There are a range of online resources available such as SunSPOT’s solar potential tool and the Australian Government’s Solar Consumer Guide to help you select the right size system for your home or business with the fastest payback period (with and without a battery) before contacting an installer.
We recommend sourcing at least two quotes from an approved retailer or installer. Visit the Solar Accreditation Australia website for more information on how to select a solar retailer and installer.
What financial support is available?
Eligible rooftop solar may receive a discount under the Federal Government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Ask your installer for more information.
In addition, Council is currently offering rebates to eligible households and small businesses for the installation of rooftop solar as part of round 3 of our Sustainability Rebates Program.
Sustainability Rebates Program eligibility criteria:
Only available for households and small businesses in the Shellharbour LGA
Installation must be completed from 1 July 2026 until 30 June 2027
Rebates are not available for new developments or installations on assets or land owned or controlled by State Government entities.
Must be installed by a licensed tradesperson and meet all compliance and installation standards
See Council’s Sustainability Rebate Program Guidelines for full terms and conditions.
