Solar batteries store excess energy generated by solar panels during the day to power your home or business at night, avoiding peak-time electricity rates, reducing grid reliance and protecting against power outages with backup storage.

How do I select the right battery for me?

SunSPOT’s solar potential tool can help you to estimate your battery needs before contacting an installer. The NSW’s Government’s guide to owning a battery provides tips to help you make informed decisions when purchasing a solar battery system. We recommend sourcing at least two quotes.

What financial support is available?

Eligible residents and businesses can reduce the cost of battery installation with the NSW Government's Virtual Power Plant Battery incentive and the Federal solar battery rebate.

In addition, Council is currently offering a rebate to eligible households and small businesses for the installation of a solar battery as part of round 3 of our Sustainability Rebates Program.

Sustainability Rebates Program eligibility criteria:

  • Only available for households and small businesses in the Shellharbour LGA

  • Installation must be completed from 1 July 2026 until 30 June 2027

  • Rebates are not available for new developments or installations on assets or land owned or controlled by State Government entities.

  • Must be installed by a licensed tradesperson and meet all compliance and installation standards
