Here are some of our most frequently asked questions about road resurfacing.

How do you choose which roads to improve?

Funding for the Road Resealing and Rehabilitation Program is allocated in our annual Capital Works Program. To make sure that this funding gets spent on those streets which need it most, road projects are prioritised based on things like current and predicted road condition, traffic volume and type of use. 

Council also uses AI camera technology to automatically detect road and footpath defects, to improve safety and speed up maintenance. The system captures images with GPS data to create a detailed defect database, helping prioritise repairs based on severity. 

How do you decide which road treatment it gets?

The condition and location of the road will determine what treatment it requires. Roads in high traffic areas will often receive asphalt surfacing, while spray seal is great for areas with shifting soils or roads with weather-related damage. 

My street looks okay, why is it being resurfaced?

Although the road looks fine, our engineers have identified it as requiring repairs. This may be due to something you cannot immediately see, like damage to the lower layers of the road base or a minor defect that could become a major problem if left untreated.  

How can I nominate my street for renewal?

You can report general or non-urgent maintenance on a Council-owned road here

Will I be able to access my property during roadworks?

Yes, however we recommend that you consider parking on nearby streets to avoid delays or issues due to reduced access to your property.   

How will I be told about roadworks?

If your street has been scheduled for resurfacing, you will receive a notification letter informing you of the works. This will explain the date and time the roadworks is planned, where it will take place, how property access may be impacted and who to contact if you have any further questions. 

Why are there loose rocks on the road?

When the stones are first spread, not all of them stick straight away. They need time, traffic, and rolling to press them into the bitumen. Until then, some stones will stay loose on the surface. 

What Happens Next? 

  • We apply temporary speed limits to keep everyone safe and reduce stone flicking. 
  • After a few days, we sweep up the extra stones once the seal has set properly. 
     

Why Do We Do This? 
Loose stones at first mean the road will last longer and stay safer in the long run. It’s a normal part of making sure your roads are strong and durable. 

How does the old asphalt get recycled?

When we remove old asphalt from roads, it doesn’t go to landfill—it gets recycled! The old material is collected, crushed, and cleaned, then mixed with fresh bitumen and sometimes new stones to create strong, durable asphalt for new roads. Recycling asphalt saves natural resources, reduces waste, and helps keep road maintenance costs down, all while being better for the environment.
