Shellharbour Incubator Artist in Residency program - Stephanie Quirk

Congratulations to Stephanie Quirk, who was our Incubator Artist in Residence! Stephanie commenced her residency at The Imaginarium in Shellharbour Village, working from the space between 8 April and 5 May.

Quirk was an emerging artist based in the Illawarra (on Dharawal country) with a growing career spanning across local and international exhibitions. Her experience encompassed community engagement projects, painting, performance, and site-specific sculptural installation.

Quirk connected her experiences through the power of art, encouraging us to pay attention to the sublime, to create moments of pause, and initiate connection to place with a heightened understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.

Shellharbour Incubator Artist in Residency program - Daniel Breda

Daniel Breda was the artist in residence from August to September 2023 at The Imaginarium in Shellharbour Village.

During the residency, Daniel expanded his consistently developing inquiry into landscape painting in contemporary abstraction. The program pivoted his focus to the specific landscape surrounding Shellharbour, highlighting the architectural developments of the Shellharbour Marina, and its relationship to the Bass Point Reserve and marine biology.

Daniel developed a series of paintings, informed by this, unified with the current studies of marine life at Bass Point; specifically the dietary research of Centrostephanus Rodgersii (black sea urchin) to develop a monochromatic body of work addressing natural and mechanical forms.

The residency saw Daniel partnering with Marine Scientist, field researcher, and PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle, Jeremy Day. Mr. Day is an evidence-based conservationist and sustainability advocate, whose research focuses on urchin predators and the nature of the urchin barren habitats in NSW.

Exhibition Opening - Urchins & Architecture Daniel's exhibition opening of 'Urchins & Architecture' was held on the opening night, Friday, 15 September at the Shellharbour Imaginarium (Wentworth Street). The works featured in the exhibition were created at The Imaginarium throughout August and were showcased to the Shellharbour community!
