About the Project
The Shell Cove Sport and Recreation Facility is located on the southern edge of the award-winning Shell Cove development.
The sportsfield will provide a modern and accessible space that caters to the community’s needs and will provide a quality sporting facility for the Shellharbour LGA.
Initially identified in Council's Section 94 Development Contributions Plan of 2005 as a multipurpose open space facility, it is currently allocated towards serving the future needs of local AFL and cricket. The project will be funded by developer contributions and is proposed to deliver state-of-the-art facilities, including:
- High-quality, versatile sports fields
- Cricket training nets
- Accessible toilets
- Versatile sportsfield amenities for men's and women's sport
- Car parking
The Shell Cove Sport and Recreation Facility received $2 million in grant funding through the NSW Government's Level the Playing Field Program, which aims to enable more women and girls to train and compete in sport in a safe and inclusive environment.
Project Stages
Conception
The development of a potential sports field in Shell Cove was first identified in Council's Section 94 Developer Contributions Plan of 2005.
Feasibility Design: November 2023
This process takes into consideration the different requirements, objectives, and challenges the project may encounter.
Detailed Design: September 2025
Council is working with a design team to develop the project's design.
Construction Works: January 2026
After completing the detailed design, the next step involves initiating a tender process for the construction phase. The commencement of construction is anticipated in 2026.

How is this project being funded?
The project is funded through S7.11 development contributions collected by Shellharbour Council as part of the Shell Cove Development. The project also recieved $2 million in grant funding from the NSW Government's Level the Playing Field Program.
Will there be car parking as part of the project?
Yes, car parking will be allocated at the western end of the site with provisions for further car parking at the eastern end.
What sports will be played here?
This is a multisport facility that has been allocated towards serving the future needs of local AFL and cricket. The field construction will feature a versatile design to allow other sporting codes to also utilise the field.
How long will construction take?
The construction time is heavily dependent on weather and will require time to allow the turf cricket wicket to settle. The estimated time for construction is 12-15months.

A review of environmental factors (REF) will be undertaken, which will identify any impacts the project may have on the environment and how they will be managed.
