Motto: “Fair, Share”
Barrack Heights Community Garden was established in 2008 and is the longest running community garden. Its location is off Wattle Rd on eastern side of road in reserve, with its closest street reference being Carrington Rd.
Two dedicated members of the group include Ross and Pat. Ross has a background in urban horticulture and has been a long-standing member of the garden. Pat has a background in bush re-generation, and has done on-going work with Land Care.
The garden has over 15 garden beds with edible trees and plants growing in and around the space. Some special aspects of the garden include a citrus orchard and bush-tucker garden. The group also grows some unusual plants including dragon-fruit, bamboo, feijoa, guava and ice cream beans. They also have a steady rotation of fresh herbs and spice trees.
The garden is also a meeting place for many species of native birds such as cockatoos, corellas, magpies and white face herons frequently visit the garden and add to the beautiful nature of the space.
Ross, Pat and other visitors to the community garden meet every Wednesday from 1pm – 4:30pm. People can be involved by partaking in the Thursday meet up, or by donating old garden tools, seeds, cuttings and plants to the group.
