Facbook: Tullimbar Community Garden Group
Motto: "A diverse group of like-minded Community members and their families coming together to socialise, support, learn and share a common interest in gardening".
Tullimbar Community Garden was initiated in the early stages of the suburb's development, by local residents; the space is located on Balmoral Parade, on the north side of the children's play area.
Gardeners have come from other areas of the Illawarra and Sydney and range from children to people in their eighties. Skills are either learned from parents, life skills, researching the internet or gained from other gardeners.
The 36 garden beds are seeded and sowed according to the appropriate season and produce fresh produce for about 100 people. Citrus trees line the perimeter of the garden, with mandarin, lemon and finger lime trees growing. The group has grown more unusual crops including blueberries, kohlrabi, squash, rainbow chard and even watermelons. Flowers are in abundance, including marigolds, nasturtiums, violas and sweet peas.
Working bees for maintenance of the communal areas of the garden are held regularly. A community box is located at the entrance of the community garden where any spare harvested crops are available for the community to take.
People wanting to join the group can do so by talking to the gardeners on site or sending a message through the garden group's social media. The Secretary Carol responds to any enquires and new members wishing to join.
