PLASTIC ISN'T FANTASTIC, JOIN THE JULY CHALLENGE!
Shellharbour City Council is encouraging the community to take part in Plastic Free July by making simple changes to reduce single-use plastic. Whether at home, work, or out and about, small actions can make a big difference in cutting down waste and protecting our local environment.
Plastic Free July is a global challenge that helps people find easy ways to use less plastic in their everyday lives.

Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer said the challenge is a great way to build better habits.
“Going plastic free doesn’t mean changing everything overnight. Start small, just pick one habit to change,” he said.
“Plastics can take decades or even hundreds of years to break down. Every time we reuse instead of reaching for single-use, we’re making a better choice for our environment and future generations.”
Not sure where to start? Try these easy swaps:
- Bring reusable shopping bags
- Use containers instead of plastic wrap
- Carry a refillable drink bottle
- Say no to plastic straws and cutlery
- Choose loose fruit and veg instead of pre-packed
- Bring your own cup or dine-in
Using less plastic helps keep Shellharbour’s streets, beaches and parks clean and safe for everyone, including our wildlife.
Council is also running a Plastic Free July giveaway. Keep an eye on our social media pages for your chance to win.
