Looking After Our Local Roads
To keep our roads safe and in good condition, we carry out regular maintenance across the city. One important treatment is resealing, where we spray a thin layer of hot bitumen onto the road, then cover it with small stones that are rolled into the surface. This seals cracks, keeps water out and gives the road a new, skid-resistant surface.

Why we reseal roads

Over time, road surfaces wear down from sun, rain and traffic. Cracks can appear, and if water gets into the layers underneath, it can cause potholes and more serious damage.

Resealing protects the road before this happens. It extends the life of the surface and helps avoid costly, disruptive repairs down the track.

Resealing vs road renewal

Resealing is a preventative surface treatment for roads that are still in good structural condition.

Road renewal involves digging up and rebuilding the road base and surface – a much bigger and more expensive job.

By resealing at the right time, we reduce the need for full reconstruction and make better use of public funds.

Benefits of resealing

  • Adds up to 15 years to the life of a road
  • Around a quarter of the cost of full renewal
  • Helps prevent potholes and further surface damage
  • Quick to complete – most roads reopen the same day

What to expect during resealing

To help the works run smoothly and safely:

  • Please remove all vehicles (including trailers, boats and caravans) from the street the night before
  • Traffic control will be in place – this may include closures, detours or stop/slow signs
  • Emergency services will always have access
  • Access to your property may be restricted for short periods
  • Heavy machinery will be operating in your street
  • Loose stones on the surface are normal in the days following resealing
  • Drive slowly and carefully to avoid stone flick and help the surface settle
  • Street sweeping will be carried out in the following weeks to remove loose stones. Extra sweeping will be arranged if needed
