Release

Shellharbour City Council has delivered on its promise to upgrade local parks, with Mood Park, the last of four newly renewed playgrounds now open.

The most recently completed country-themed playground is also the largest of the new play spaces and includes a windmill climber, horse stable, blacksmith, bridges and an inclusive carousel, as well as a water table and nest swings.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that investing in the city’s play spaces was a reflection of Council’s commitment to the community’s health and wellbeing.

“These new playgrounds have been creatively designed with the whole family in mind. Children can let their imaginations thrive, learn important skills through play and gain an early appreciation for the outdoors,” Cr Saliba said.

“Through high-quality recreational facilities, parents and guardians can have a place to meet while their children play and we can ensure that the spaces will be enjoyed for many years ahead,” she said.

The other play spaces are located at Reddall Reserve in Lake Illawarra, Frasers Reserve in Albion Park, and Dawes Park in Barrack Point. The designs for each park are dynamic and involve various elements that cater for accessibility, resting, sensory receptiveness, as well as balance, climbing, and sliding.

Upgraded playground designs were developed through extensive community consultation.

More than 20,000 people engaged with the project at various stages of development and the new designs received an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars from Council’s web-based feedback.

Four other playgrounds will be renewed soon at Reddall Reserve (opposite Windang St) at Lake Illawarra, McDonald Park in Albion Park Rail and Ski Way Park and Central Park, both in Oak Flats. Upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

Council is seeking community feedback for what should be included in the new playground designs. Have your say at letschatshellharbour.com/playground-renewals.
