Release

Shellharbour City Mayor, Marianne Saliba, is encouraging residents to maintain vigilance and respect this Queen’s Birthday long weekend as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease.

Cr Saliba said that long weekends provided us with special opportunities to get out and about, and spend quality time with our loved ones but she said it was still important for everyone to continue to follow regulations to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

“Our City has a wide variety of beautiful spaces to explore – parks, reserves, beaches, sporting grounds and walking tracks. There is no doubt that over the weekend there will be an increase in both locals and visitors eager to enjoy these spaces,” Cr Saliba said.

“We can help keep each other safe by maintaining good hand hygiene, practising social distancing and staying at home if unwell.

Cr Saliba said that with multiple new and exciting play spaces popping up across the city, she understood that people were keen to try them out.

However, she said that under State Government Public Health Orders, public gatherings of more than 10 people were restricted, limiting the number of people on playgrounds at any one time.

“Even within that gathering of 10 people, you must exercise social distancing. Keep in mind that these facilities are for everyone to enjoy. I ask that you please be patient, kind and considerate of others,” Cr Saliba said.

In addition to COVID-19 precautions, Cr Saliba reminded the community that NSW Police were resuming RBT and roadside drug tests in time for the long weekend. Double demerits are also in force from Friday 5 June to Monday 8 June.
