Release

Shellharbour City Council and residents can look forward to increased accessibility at Shellharbour North Beach this swim season thanks to the donation of additional mobi matting by Shellharbour Lions Club.

Mobi matting is a portable, non-slip beach access mat designed by Deschamps Mats Systems Inc. The matting is UV, mildew and water-resistant, and is made from 100% recycled polyester.

Last year, mobi matting successfully launched at Shellharbour North Beach to enhance beach accessibility for people with disabilities, elderly visitors and parents with strollers.

The additional matting will further increase accessibility for all beach users by enabling access to the water’s edge.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that improving accessibility to Shellharbour beaches and waterways was a priority for Council.

“Shellharbour is home to many fantastic beaches and for many residents visiting these beaches regularly is a big part of their lifestyle. Beaches provide a great amount of joy, as well as significant benefits to physical and mental health,” Cr Saliba said.

“Everyone in the community deserves to have access to our beautiful beaches and it makes me proud to see local organisations working together to enhance the overall beach experience for so many residents and visitors,” she said.

Funding for the additional mobi matting came from the 2019 ClubGRANTS funding round.  ClubGRANTS funding is available to community groups, charities and sporting teams across NSW.

The launch will move inside the Surf Club if required due to weather conditions.
