Release

Local Government Week 2021 has begun and Shellharbour City Councilis marking the occasion by highlighting the broad range of services, activities and facilities it offers to the Shellharbour community.

Council’s annual Local Government Week showcase for schools in the area was unable to go ahead this year. However, local young people will still be able to discover the services undertaken by council in a fun and interactive way.

Resource packs shared with students and teachers (5-12 years and 12+) have been designed to give students a general knowledge of council through scavenger hunts, crosswords, find-a-words and other engaging activities.

Council has also developed an educational video that will be shared with local young people, as well as the broader community through social media. The video’s audio is narrated by a member of the Shellharbour City Youth Council, Savannah Kesby.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said although the annual local government showcase was unable to go ahead, she was proud of council’s continued efforts to share the broad scope of its tasks and the importance that these have in shaping the city’s future.

“Council’s duties go beyond ‘rates, roads and rubbish’ that everyone is familiar with. Although these are an important part of what we do, there are also many other ways council services impact the community daily,” Cr Saliba said.

“Local government is the closest government tier to the community. We want anyone that lives, works or visits Shellharbour to know that we are here for them, and highlight the many ways we can help.”
