Mayor Marianne Saliba has broken ground on the new Warilla Library site.
The new library will be located at Keith Fletcher Park (behind Warilla Grove Shopping Centre).
Once developed, it will provide a new branch library and replace the existing Warilla Library located on New Lake Entrance Road.
The need for this new facility was identified in the Libraries and Museum Strategy 2024, which was adopted in March 2014.
Responding to the Strategy, Council engaged with the community to gain an understanding of what the community would like to see in the new library and how they would like to use it.
The new Warilla Library will have over 900m2 of indoor and outdoor space, comfortable seating, a technology hub including free Wi-Fi and computer access, meeting and study rooms, dedicated children and youth spaces and good accessibility.
Cr Saliba said that moving to a new site brought the opportunity to provide upgraded facilities and even better services.
“This is a significant investment in library services in our community,” Cr Saliba said.
“Library services have come a long way in recent years. I can remember when I was young, Warilla Library operated out of a garage.
“How far we’ve come since then – this library will be a flexible, modern and welcoming space that feels like a ‘community living room’,” she said.
The new library will cost just over $5.6 million and will be built by Sydney-based company, Patterson Building Group.
The existing Warilla Library on Lake Entrance Road will remain operational during the construction of the new Library.
