Shellharbour City Council was one of many organisations to collaborate with the NSW State Emergency Services for their Ohana Project, which was awarded winner of the government category at the 2020 Resilient Australia Awards this week.

The Ohana Project was an initiative focused on planning for animals in emergencies, with a major outcome the ‘Get Ready Animals’ website.

Bringing together a comprehensive range of information and resources, including templates, contacts and advice, the website helps communities across NSW prepare and plan for pets and animals in the case of an emergency.

The Resilient Australia Awards is a nation-wide program to recognise and promote initiatives that strengthen community disaster resilience.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that she was proud of Council’s contributions to such a valuable initiative.

“An emergency plan for your pets and animals can not only provide them with safety, but it can also help you act quickly and keep safe too,” Cr Saliba said.

“I encourage the community to take a look at the fantastic resources on offer and to share with other animal owners. Let’s help make sure our community is prepared, reduce risks and protect our four-legged friends,” she said.
