A new public artwork commissioned by Shellharbour City Council is has been installed at Reddall Reserve today as a new addition to the Lake Illawarra Art Trail.

The artwork titled Synergy, by artist Keane Minogue from studio 303, is a four-metre high sculpture piece that depicts a variety of local marine life swimming up and around a ring of seaweed.

Artist Kane Minogue crafted the artwork using an extensive range of recycled metal objects, including parts over 60-years-old, to encourage respect for the lake and life within it.

These include old tools, motorbike parts, industrial and old farm machinery, golf clubs, and push bike pedals.

The design is a representation of the circle of life, synergy and sense of community in and around the lake.

The piece was inspired by the life of the traditional custodians of the area and their use of the lake as a meeting place and valuable source of food, as well the recreational function of how the lake is used today.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that the artwork captured the cultural significance of Lake Illawarra and the importance of protecting it for future generations.

“Synergy has expanded the Lake Illawarra Art Trail to include eight unique sculptural artworks. Together these pieces showcase the area’s rich history and culture, as well as help transform the foreshore for both residents and visitors to enjoy,” Cr Saliba said.

“New Public Art installations were identified in the Reddall Reserve Master Plan, which was informed by extensive community consultation,” she said.
