Shellharbour City Council will host free Sensory Concerts in March for families to experience a classical music concert in a relaxed and inclusive environment.

Sensory Concerts are high-quality classical concerts for people of all ages. The concerts are tailored for those who are sensitive to crowds, noise, light, smell and touch and create a safe and accepting place to enjoy live classical music.

The concept of Sensory Concerts was created by Grace Kim, a concert pianist and a mother with a determination to make quality music accessible to all, without fear of social judgement.

The concerts are held in small numbers and feature various sensory-friendly seating options, a retreat space, freedom of movement and on-site therapist support.

The music is designed to calm the senses and contains elements known to be attractive to those on the Autism spectrum.

The family-friendly Sensory Concerts will be held across two sessions at the Shellharbour City Library on Sunday 6 March at 2pm and 3pm.

Shellharbour City Mayor, Chris Homer said the sessions were a wonderful opportunity for those who want to attend a concert but were worried about being judged or finding it just too overwhelming.

“The sensory concerts will allow an ‘Opera House’ standard performance and are designed to satisfy both first-timers and seasoned concert goers, of all ages,” Mayor Homer said.

“I encourage those interested to attend and enjoy a different and more comfortable concert experience.”
