Release

Shellharbour City Council has made FOGO even easier with residents set to receive a free six months’ supply of compostable bags.

Shellharbour City Council implemented FOGO in 2016 and since then has processed over 58,000 tonnes of food and garden organics.

In the last 12 months alone, Shellharbour residents have sent 13,000 tonnes of FOGO to the Dunmore Waste processing facility to be turned into nutrient-rich compost. Council believes there is still room for improvement.

The compostable bag initiative, ‘The little green bag for the big green bin’ has been implemented in response to community feedback that residents would be more inclined to use FOGO if they could bag food scraps.

The bags are certified to the compostable Australian Standard AS4736, which means that they completely break down in less than 90 days.

To support residents that might be new to FOGO, council is also offering a free caddy that can be ordered online and will be delivered with the compostable bags in September.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said the new initiative supported everyone in the community to get involved and help divert waste from landfill.

“By making the most of FOGO, residents help can reduce methane gas emissions, save landfill space and contribute to the production of nutrient-rich compost,” Cr Saliba said.

“We all have the potential to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a greener future by simply throwing our food scraps into the green bin” she said.

Following the first delivery of bags, Shellharbour residents will have the chance to receive a second free six-month supply of Little Green Bags.
