Release

A large new mural depicting colourful rainbow lorikeets is catching the attention of residents and visitors to Oak Flats.

Local artist Trina Collins aka ‘Poncho Army’ successfully won the commission to create a mural with her concept art, Two Heads is Better Than One.

The mural is located at 46 Central Avenue, welcoming people entering from the south of Central Ave.

The commissioning of the new mural is an extension of Shellharbour City Council’s Oak Flats Urban Art Program that started with artist Claire Foxton’s mural in 2016. The program aims to reduce graffiti and enhance the space by providing urban art to the community.

Together the two Urban Art Project murals bookend the Oak Flats retail strip.

Shellharbour Deputy Mayor John Murray said the artwork responded to the site in the heart of Oak Flats, welcoming people as they entered the town centre.

“It’s a great theme, the power of all people to make a difference. The installation of a mural aims to enhance and enliven the area, connect and inspire the community.

“It’s also hoped that the artwork will also reduce the incidence of graffiti, tagging and malicious damage to property in the area.”
