Shellharbour City households, schools and community groups are set to join over 400,000 people across the country as a part of the ninth annual Garage Sale Trail.

The event will take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October, and encourages residents to host and shop garage sales to promote the reuse of second-hand goods.

Garage Sale Trail is a community and sustainability event, powered by over 140 local councils nation-wide. It is expected that this year’s weekend-long event will involve 16,000 garage sales across the country.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that Garage Sale Trail was a fun way for Council to encourage reuse and help educate the community about the positive impacts of buying secondhand.

“Shellharbour City Council is passionate about reducing our region’s waste and this initiative is another fantastic way that the community can become involved to support sustainable waste practices,” Cr Saliba said

‘At the end of the day, we need to learn as a society to take responsibility for the waste we create. This is an opportunity to not only declutter and raise money, but also connect with neighbours and the broader community,” she said.

At last year’s event, more than 500kg of secondhand goods were sold and redistributed, and households made on average $309. Free registration at garagesaletrail.com.au.
