Shellharbour City Council is encouraging residents to roll up their sleeves and volunteer to help support this year’s Graffiti Removal Day on Sunday 27 October.

Graffiti vandalism costs NSW more than $300 million every year.  The aim of Graffiti Removal Day, a NSW Government initiative, is to highlight the problem of graffiti across NSW and encourage people to volunteer their time to remove and prevent graffiti.

This year the community can get involved by coming along to help remove graffiti at Boonerah Point Scout Hall from 9 am to 2 pm, or by nominating a graffiti clean-up site. Registration is required at: graffitiremovalday.org.au.

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that participation in the event was a fun way to make a positive difference in the appearance of the Shellharbour City, alongside friends, family and fellow community members.

“Graffiti vandalism is an ongoing problem, and events like this not only raise awareness of the issue but also give opportunity for residents to display community pride,” Cr Saliba said.

“Council is currently developing a public art strategy that will help decrease graffiti through the revitalisation of public spaces, and are also implementing LED lighting across the City to help deter graffiti vandals,” she said.

The event is in partnership with Dulux and Shellharbour City Rotary Club, and all participants on the day will receive a hat and coveralls. Volunteers are also encouraged to wear old clothing, fully enclosed shoes, and sunscreen.
