A new sculpture has been installed on the rooftop of Shellharbour Village Exhibition Space, as a part of Shellharbour City Council’s Public Art Program.

The sculpture, titled Fluidity by artist Orlando Norrish, is an abstract piece that spans 15 metres in length and is comprised of steel sheets that have been folded into geometric shapes (click here for Facebook video).

Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that the new public artwork was an exciting addition to the Shellharbour Village Exhibition Space. 

“The sculpture that resembles a school of fish sweeping across the roof of the building and then transforming into a flock of birds, is an intricate piece that reflects the beauty of our natural areas,” Cr Saliba said. 

“I am pleased to see our City embracing public art, particularly when it adds new points of difference to enliven public spaces and uplifts residents,” she said.  

Bulli local, Orlando Norrish has spent months working on the piece, individually folding, welding and polishing the stainless steel diamonds that make up the sculpture. 

He said that Fluidity is a celebration of diversity, movement, and change both within the natural world and in modern society. 

“I wanted to design a sculpture which was both referencing nature in the local area, while still remaining somewhat abstract and open to interpretation,” Orlando said. 

Shellharbour City Council’s Public Art Strategy is currently being developed and will act as a framework to inform all levels of decision-making related to public art in the city.
