Shellharbour City Council marked R U OK Day with a community walk involving staff, Councillors and members of the public.

The annual suicide prevention event reminds the community to ask family, friends and colleagues R U OK, providing an opportunity to join forces in the fight against mental health issues.

National suicide prevention charity R U OK aims to inspire and empower meaningful connections and support anyone who is struggling.

This year’s message ‘Ask R U OK – No qualifications needed’ reminds us that anyone can check in - you don’t have to be a professional to have an R U OK conversation.

Listening and giving someone your time might be just what they need to get them through. A conversation can save a life.

Shellharbour City Council Mayor Chris Homer joined the walk and said the past few years had been particularly challenging for everyone.

“It’s more important than ever to stay connected and support each other. R U OK Day is our opportunity to remind people that every day is the day to ask someone if they are ok, especially if you know they’re struggling with life’s ups and downs,” Mayor Homer said.

“Suicide is a major public health concern and affects people of all ages and socio-economic groups. Indeed, several local young people have tragically taken their own lives in our community, leaving many reeling with grief and shock.

“I am proud that Shellharbour City Council actively promotes and supports mental health and suicide prevention. It is vital to our health and wellbeing that we feel connected, supported and respected.

“People won’t always let you know if something’s troubling them so it’s important to make asking ‘are you ok?’ a part of everyday relationships with friends, family, team mates and colleagues.

“This simple act of starting and engaging in regular conversation could hold the power to significantly change another person’s life,” he said.
