Additional regulatory patrols by Shellharbour City Council, NSW Fisheries and Maritime Officers and an increased police presence are planned for the city’s reserves, beaches, Lake Illawarra and the Shell Cove marina precinct over the Australia Day public holiday and following weekend.

Surveillance patrols by Shellharbour City Council officers will be increased to ensure visitors comply with parking requirements.

Council staff and security providers will inspect Bass Point Reserve and Reddall Reserve to deter illegal camping. Camping issues may also be referred to police for assistance.

Council has also arranged for additional afternoon cleaning, restocking of amenities and the emptying of bins.

Visitors to Bass Point Reserve are to obey all signs and reminded that off-road four-wheel-driving, dogs and fires are prohibited in all parts of the reserve. Any driving must be confined to designated roads and parking must be in designated parking areas only within the reserve.

Shellharbour beaches will continue to be patrolled throughout the public holiday with lifeguards stationed at three locations at Warilla, two locations at North Shellharbour and one location at South Shellharbour.

Shellharbour City pools will also be patrolled and Shellharbour Airport, The Links, The Tavern and Dunmore Depot will be open as normal.

Council facilities that will be CLOSED on Thursday 26 January include:
•    Shellharbour City Stadium
•    Shellharbour City Libraries
•    Shellharbour Civic Centre
•    Shellharbour Youth Centre
•    Shellharbour City Museum

Shellharbour City Council Mayor Chris Homer encouraged everyone to be mindful of signage and follow advice to ensure a safe and happy public holiday.

“Our beaches, parks and reserves are popular places to spend Australia Day but please be aware of overcrowding, take your rubbish with you and follow the advice of Council rangers, lifeguards and police,” he said.

“Importantly, if you’re enjoying our beautiful beaches, please swim between the flags, be aware of the conditions and talk to our lifeguards if you have any questions,” he said.
