Release

Shellharbour City Council has commenced plans to improve the road safety of pedestrians and drivers on Terry Street in Albion Park.

The transport team has proposed several safety upgrades to reduce traffic incidents on Terry Street between Wiley Street and Simpson Parade and to accommodate an increase in pedestrian activity.

Plans will include the installation and upgrade of five pedestrian crossing points, installation of three designated turning lanes and implementation of turning restrictions on Wiley Street and Hughes Drive.

The existing bus shelter will be relocated and new infrastructure will be constructed to be disability compliant.

Shared-use path links will be installed at each crossing point and Transport for NSW will reduce the speed limit from 60km/h to 50km/h.

There will be impacts to on-street parking as a result of pedestrian refuges and blisters, however, Council aims to limit this loss.

Funding has been secured under the 2021/22 NSW Road Safety Program and the project is anticipated to be completed by June 2022.

Shellharbour City Mayor Marianne Saliba said the new changes would reduce the likelihood of a crash occurring and improve road safety in Albion Park.

“The safety of our community in Albion Park is our highest concern. These upgrades will go a long way towards ensuring traffic safety in what has become a very busy area,” Cr Saliba.
