Shellharbour City Council offers help to storm-affected residents

As clean-up efforts continue following this week's extreme weather, Shellharbour City Council is offering residents free green waste disposal at Dunmore Resource Recovery Centre.

Shellharbour Mayor Councillor Marianne Saliba said the high winds resulted in significant damage to trees and property.

“The Shellharbour City community suffered a great deal of damage this week. I know that many residents have a lot of tree branches and other green waste that is perhaps too large to fit into their green bin,” Cr Saliba said.

“To help with the clean-up process, Council is offering residents the opportunity to dispose of their green waste free of charge.

“Council has offered this service after previous weather events and we are pleased to be able to provide it again, especially during the difficult time we are experiencing with COVID-19 lockdown,” she said.

To keep everyone COVID safe, free disposal will be available at designated times on the following dates only:

  • Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 August

  • Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 September

Residents will need to book online and arrive at their designated time and wear a mask as per public health orders. To book a time, please visit Council’s Facebook page.

Cr Saliba expressed her sincere thanks to the volunteers, emergency service workers and Council staff who assisted during the height of the storm and with the subsequent clean up.

“There were volunteers from Shellharbour City State Emergency Service (SES) and NSW Rural Fire Service, representatives from Fire and Rescue NSW as well other community volunteers. I also want to thank the many Council staff who assisted during the storm and with the clean-up,” she said.

Shellharbour City SES Incident Commander, Richard Hart, said that the Shellharbour City was the hardest hit local government area in the Illawarra region.

“Our SES unit had 346 callouts in the Shellharbour LGA – 50% from Albion Park - followed by Albion Park Rail, Shell Cove and Flinders,” Mr Hart said.

“We’ve been working through the jobs quickly. As of Thursday afternoon, there were only about 50 jobs remaining.”

Mr Hart said he was hopeful that the remaining jobs would be completed by the end of the week.
