Shellharbour City Libraries celebrates literacy in national event

Shellharbour City Council will participate in this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime to celebrate reading and literacy for children across Australia on Wednesday 25 May at 11am.

Locals will join thousands of children in other libraries, child care centres, schools, homes and book stores across the country to read the picture book Family Tree by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh. There will also be a special reader’s theatre, songs, dancing, craft and fun.

The Family Tree looks at the beauty of life through the growth of a gum tree, which spreads love and joy while depicting the ways in which communities and families around the world evolve together in unity.

There are also special storytimes and activities across Shellharbour City Libraries including Warilla, Oak Flats and Albion Park libraries during this week.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the event was a great opportunity to celebrate reading and literacy for children across Australia.

“I encourage everyone to attend this fun and engaging story time session. Shellharbour City Libraries host a number of great sessions for children and families and it is great that Shellharbour can be a part of this national event,” he said.
