Council’s goal is to plant 2,500 native seedlings each day to help restore habitat corridors for local wildlife.
The wider community is encouraged to come along and participate. Be sure to wear enclosed shoes, hat, and protective clothing. Gloves, sunscreen, and water will be provided.
Shellharbour City Council Mayor Chris Homer welcomes the community’s involvement in these important environmental initiatives.
“There’s something special about rolling up your sleeves for a good cause,” Mayor Homer said.
“These planting days are not just about growing trees, they’re about growing connections too. It’s a great way to support our local wildlife and make our community even greener.”
In 2022, Council received a $160,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust, in partnership with Local Government NSW. This funding supports planting native seedlings to reduce human-wildlife conflicts in urban areas by restoring natural habitats.
By 2030, Shellharbour City Council aims to plant 30,000 native trees, shrubs, climbers, and ground cover plants in Blackbutt Forest and Croom Reserve – locations chosen with the community’s input.
