Release

Shellharbour City Council Mayor Councillor Marianne Saliba has been awarded a Life Membership of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) NSW Branch.

Cr Saliba was recognised for her long and distinguished political career and outstanding record of supporting and encouraging women in leadership roles.

She received the honour at the organisation’s annual state conference in Shellharbour on the weekend.

The award citation described Cr Saliba as a “fighter for her community, for fairness, gender equality and a loyal, compassionate and supportive colleague”.

As current ALGWA National President and NSW Executive member, Cr Saliba has been particularly proactive in supporting women involved in local government as elected representatives and staff members.

She said she was deeply honoured to receive recognition for her services to the equality and promotion of women in local government.

“I have always been passionate about ensuring the treatment of all people, and I firmly believe that many more women can make an impact in their communities by getting involved in local government,” Cr Saliba said.

“This award is particularly special to me as my mother, the late May Hudson, also received an ALGWA Life Membership,” Cr Saliba said.

Cr Saliba was the Member for Illawarra in the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2007.

She was elected to Shellharbour City Council in 2011 and has been Mayor since 2012.

She is currently a board member of Local Government NSW.
