Shellharbour City Council is hosting a series of events in recognition of International Day of People with Disability.

International Day of People with a Disability is celebrated worldwide on 3 December each year.

In conjunction with Wollongong City Council, regional events have been organised for the launch of the Celebration of Ability Calendar.

The events provide opportunity to recognise the achievements and contributions that people with a disability make to our community. Events will run until Friday 9 December across the Illawarra.

The festival is fun, accessible and inclusive with workshops, activities, exhibitions, community information sessions and more.

NDIS providers, carers and people living with a disability are all encouraged to attend.

There will be a surf day, free entry and aqua aerobics at Shellharbour pools for residents with disabilities and their carers from 1 to 7 December.

There will also be workshops on emergency preparedness, natural pest management, food waste and an inclusive watercolour scarves workshop.

Other events include the healthy end of life café and a watercolour scarf workshop. There will also be an art exhibition showcasing amazing works produced by the women with a disability from the Playing with Colour group.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the event was a great way to share and enjoy the accessible and disability-friendly activities in the Illawarra region.

“The Celebration of Ability Calendar is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the valuable contribution people with a disability make to our community,” Mayor Homer said.

“I encourage people with a disability and their families to take part in the fantastic activities throughout Shellharbour and Wollongong”, Mayor Homer said.

Registration for activities is essential.
