Council staff have begun the strategic planning process to create a masterplan of Albion Park and Shellharbour cemeteries.
Considerations for staff involve investigation of existing site-specific issues, including heritage impacts and operational issues.
Council adopted its Cemetery Operations Policy on 4 September 2018. As part of the initial research, ground penetrating radar showed 17 potential unmarked graves that have not been identified in current Council records.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said because the cemetery dated back to 1900, the discovery was not unexpected.
“It is not uncommon to find unmarked graves in older cemeteries. Council’s job now is to - sensitively and with respect - conduct further exploration,” Cr Saliba said.
“Results from the ground penetrating radar study will inform the future planning of the site. Council aims to respectfully meet the current and future needs of the community.”
“This study has continued over the past two weeks, with more ground penetrating radar results still to be analysed,” Cr Saliba said.
“As the options for the site develop, the future management of the area - including unmarked graves - will be communicated with all relevant stakeholders including the community and those who have a specific interest in the cemetery plans.”
The Tongarra Heritage Society has previously offered advice in relation to unmarked graves and heritage at local cemeteries and it is proposed to consult with the society on this masterplan.
Council staff have started discussions with industry experts on providing assistance with the strategic business planning and are looking to engage an expert early next year.
