Release

Shellharbour City Council is set to host another series of Sensory Concerts on 14 October, welcoming world-class musicians to the Shellharbour Civic Centre for families to enjoy.

The event will showcase a classical trio, performing music suitable for people all ages and for families with sensory and additional needs.

Thoughtfully designed to accommodate individuals who experience heightened sensitivity to factors such as large crowds, noise, lighting, smell, touch and tactile sensations, the concerts offer a safe and accepting place to enjoy and experience live music.

The concept of Sensory Concerts was created by Grace Kim, a concert pianist and a mother with the resolve to ensure that high-quality music is accessible to everyone, without fear of facing social judgement.

The concerts are intentionally kept small in numbers and provide a range of sensory-friendly seating options, a designated retreat area, an on-site therapist to support families and the freedom to move around as needed.

The music selections are carefully chosen to calm the senses and be comforting to individuals on the Autism spectrum.

Shellharbour City Mayor, Chris Homer, said he was excited to see the return of the family-friendly event to Shellharbour City.

“The Sensory Concerts make ‘Opera House-standard’ performances accessible and enjoyable for local families,” Mayor Homer said.

“The musicians interact with the children and encourage them to dance and get up close to the instruments. It’s a wonderful experience for everyone. I encourage interested people to attend.”

The concerts will be held at 10.30am and 11.45am. Registrations are essential as spaces are limited.
