Release

Shellharbour City Council is saddened to hear of the recent vandalism at one of Council’s sports fields. Vandals have targeted the Myimbarr Sports Complex by removing copper wiring from floodlights and illuminators.

The vandalism has rendered the floodlights unsafe to use resulting in power outages at the fields.

At this stage, Council is working with NSW police with their investigation. In the meantime, an electrical contractor is working to make the area safe. Council is unsure how long it will take to repair the damage.

Council’s CEO Mike Archer is urging residents to keep an eye out for vandalism in the community and report it to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

“This act of vandalism affects the whole community, not just sports field users. Our residents are very proud of our city, and I appreciate how frustrating it will be for them to know that their assets are being targeted.

“The removal of the copper wiring renders these fields unsafe for use after dark and, may result in clubhouses losing perishable items due to power outages,” he said.

Mayor Chris Homer said he was saddened by the senseless destruction of community property.
