SIGN UP FOR THIS YEAR’S ULTIMATE LEARNER LOG BOOK RUN

Learner drivers with 40 hours’ recorded driving experience are encouraged to register for this year’s Shellharbour City Council Ultimate Learner Log Book Run Experience.

This free annual event provides young drivers and their supervisors with the opportunity to participate in a planned drive that includes a range of driving experiences.

It will be held on Sunday 7 April from 8am to 2:30pm at Lake Illawarra PCYC, Reddall Parade, Lake Illawarra.

The event will include driver reviver, roadside random breath testing and random drug testing information from police, reverse parking tuition as well as demonstrations and presentations from Police Crash Investigation Unit and NSW Fire Rescue.

The SES will talk about Project U-turn, which focuses on understanding the dangers of driving through flood waters. A victim of road trauma will also share their personal experience.

This year’s event will also focus on the importance of being ‘truck aware’, which reinforces the messaging about their main blind spots and inability to stop quickly.

The Ultimate Learner Log Book Run Experience is an initiative of Shellharbour, Wollongong and Kiama Councils, supported by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) in collaboration with NSW Police Service, NSW Fire Rescue, NSW SES, Holcim, Lake Illawarra PCYC, and the Illawarra Road Safety Group.

According to TfNSW statistics, the Illawarra (Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama) in 2021/2022, there were 542 casualties resulting from 413 crashes. Of these, 108 were seriously injured and sadly 4 people lost their lives.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the event was a wonderful opportunity for learner drivers and their supervisors to gain valuable experience from frontline emergency services personnel.

“This event is a golden opportunity for learner drivers and their supervisors to experience a series of practical and powerful demonstrations from the experts whilst gaining log book hours on a planned route,” Mayor Homer said.

“It is also a great opportunity for their parents and carers to refresh some important road safety messages and behaviours that are overrepresented in crashes.

“As you can see from the TfNSW statistics, road safety needs to be at the forefront of everybody’s mind,” he said.

Bookings are essential. Participants will need to bring a supervisor, L-plates, licences, log book, a registered vehicle with plenty of fuel and at least 40 hours recorded in their log book.

All participants will receive an event goody bag and be in the draw to win several prizes.
