Release

After two years of cancellations due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 and severe weather in 2021, the popular Ultimate Learner Log Book Run Experience is returning in 2022 in a new format.

To safeguard this year’s event, the experience will combine online presentations by road safety experts followed by a practical component involving a COVID-safe ‘treasure hunt’ around the region.

The Ultimate Learner Log Book Run Experience is an initiative of Shellharbour, Wollongong and Kiama Councils, along with their collaborative partners. It provides an opportunity for learner drivers and their supervisors to experience practical demonstrations while gaining log book hours.

Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer said he was delighted with the new format, praising the organisers for “thinking outside the box” to ensure the event could go ahead safely.

“I know how disappointed learner drivers were when they had to miss out on this popular event two years in a row. It is fantastic that the organisers have devised a way to deliver the same service and information in a COVID-safe way,” Mayor Homer said.

“This unique event is a powerful and practical way for learners to gain knowledge while accumulating log book hours. They will benefit from expert knowledge from road safety professionals like Highway Patrol, NSW Fire Rescue, Police Crash Investigation Unit and SES,” he said.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday 29 May from 8.30am to 2.30pm. Briefings and presentations by road safety experts will be provided online via Microsoft Teams, with learners and their supervisors joining in from the comfort of their homes.

After the presentations, drivers and the supervisors will participate in a ‘treasure hunt’, driving to the starting point at the Lake Illawarra Police and Community Youth Club (LIPCYC).

Learners will be asked to scan a QR code on the wall of the building before answering five questions.

They will then see a link to a map directing direct them to the next QR code location. This process will be repeated, with a focus on speeding, mobile phone use, drink driving and fatigue at each location.

All participants will receive a goody bag and be in the draw to win a number of prizes.
