UPDATED ADVICE: DISPOSAL OF RECALLED COLOURED SAND

Shellharbour City Council is advising residents of updated guidance regarding the disposal of nationally recalled children’s coloured sand products.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recalled a range of children’s decorative and coloured sand products after testing found they may contain naturally occurring tremolite asbestos.

Residents who think their coloured sand product may be affected should first check the latest recall notices and advice on the ACCC Product Safety website.

Residents can now double bag the recalled sand and safely dispose of it in their regular red-lid kerbside bin.

This advice is different to asbestos-containing materials such as fibro sheeting, which must never be placed in household bins.

Key points for residents:

  • Double bag the coloured sand in strong plastic bags
  • Tape the bags tightly
  • Place the bagged sand in your red-lid kerbside bin

For more information, check the latest advice on the ACCC Product Safety website.

KEY MESSAGES:

  • Residents can now double bag recalled coloured sand and put it in their red-lid household rubbish bin.
  • This advice is different from asbestos materials like fibro sheeting, which must never go in household bins.
