MEDIA STATEMENT - WINDANG ISLAND FIRE

Shellharbour City Council is aware of the recent fire on Windang Island and is working with lead agencies to understand the impacts.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has investigated the fire and referred information to NSW Police. Enquiries about the cause of the fire should be directed to NSW Police.

Council’s Environment team will inspect the site this week to assess the extent of damage and identify any potential risks. The island will continue to be monitored over the coming months as the natural environment recovers.

Windang Island is an environmentally and culturally significant location. It supports threatened plant and animal species, endangered ecological communities and important wildlife habitat.

The full impact of the fire is not yet known. Initial assessments will help guide recovery actions, however some effects may take time to become clear as native vegetation regenerates and wildlife returns.

Council is not aware of any current Little Tern nesting sites on the island. While the species has previously been recorded nearby, advice from shorebird specialists indicates the island itself is not suitable for nesting.

Council will continue working with environmental and cultural heritage experts.
