Release

Shellharbour City Council is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) from local Aboriginal artists and designers to help create new suburb signage throughout Shellharbour.

The new signage will incorporate the designs, which should be unique, traditional or contemporary in style and reflect the local area.

Council is replacing 20 suburb signs across the city. In October, the community was invited to vote for one of four designs. The most popular design incorporated a piece of art commissioned by a local Aboriginal artist.

A key feature of the signs will be the inclusion of the local Aboriginal language.

The inclusion of Aboriginal place names will enhance the community’s understanding and appreciation of both the landscape and Aboriginal cultural heritage of our city.

Shellharbour City Council CEO, Carey McIntyre, said that the design of suburb signs by an Aboriginal artist would enhance the area and demonstrated Council’s commitment to the acknowledgement of Country and the area’s Traditional Owners.

“I encourage all Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists and designers to apply. This is a great opportunity to showcase their work and share their culture and traditional art,” Mr McIntyre said.

Interested artists are invited to submit EOIs to Carmelina Nunnari: carmelina.nunnari@shellharbour.nsw.gov.au

Applications close midnight 19 December 2021.
